Trade Secrets: Contribute to a Team

Featuring OUTDOOR FILMMAKER Sophie Danison

Home Base / Victor, Idaho.

Insider Knowledge

You often don’t get to choose the crew you’re with—from athletes to photographers—when you’re on a film shoot in the mountains. But you do get to choose how you interact with the group. Sophie loves to observe the team dynamics before deciding on the best path to contribute in a positive way. “I like watching and learning from the veterans, be it on long productions or river trips,” says Sophie.

The longer I do this, the more I appreciate people who are showing up every day.

“Do they meditate in the morning? How often are they checking up on team morale? How do they offer feedback and create space for those conversations? The longer I do this, the more I appreciate people who are showing up every day not just with a strong work ethic and desire to do the best possible job, but also to contribute positively to the team. You can learn a lot—and contribute more—if you’re willing to listen and learn.”

Quick Tip:

When on a film shoot, make sure you’re taking care of your own needs—sleep, nutrition, exercise—so that you can be a positive contributing member for the rest of your team. “Making a film is a team sport,” says Danison. “I try to remember, how can I make sure I’m good so that I can show up for everyone else?”
