Home Base / Salt Lake City, Utah

Activities / Freeskiing, backcountry skiing, surfing

Insider Knowledge:

When starting a new venture, Giray’s advice is simple: “You just have to start doing it. You can look for the job, look for the opportunity, look for the sponsorship, but if that search is holding you back, you’re already failing. You just need to start doing it and the rest will come.”

Giray learned this advice from Jason Levinthal, who probably knows best, given he founded both LINE Skis and J Skis. When the would-be entrepreneur Giray was struggling with the bureaucracy involved with starting Daymaker Touring, Levinthal set him straight. “He was like, ‘Dude, make a basic website, put your product up, and just start selling it! Deal with the paperwork in a couple weeks.’ There’s no point in doing paperwork for something that doesn’t exist.”

Quick Tip:

The same advice applies to just about any career path. “If you want to make ski films, pick up a camera and start filming with your friends. If you can’t get a job as an engineer, start making CAD models and drawing skis and designs. When you go for that interview, you can show them all these designs. They’ll see you’re a go-getter. You don’t need the job or the opportunity to get started.”
